Position Title:  Lead Pastor

Position Type:  Full-Time (40-50 hours per week)

Position Responsibilities:  To lead, serve, and teach our church’s body of believers, under the direction of God’s Holy Spirit, through the instruction of God’s Word. The Lead Pastor’s role is shepherd and work with other pastoral staff members to develop, communicate, and equip the church to implement a vision for Gospel growth within our fellowship, and Gospel outreach to our community and the world.

The English-speaking Congregation (EC) of Open Door Presbyterian Church (ODPC) is looking for an experienced Lead Pastor to join and lead the EC pastoral team to journey together with the team and assist in leading the congregation toward active, missional living, transformation & growth.  Essentially, ODPC EC is looking for an experienced (7+ years in full-time ministry preferred) pastor who is an articulate and thoughtful communicator and a natural leader; the Lead Pastor, who, along with his family, will live among and minister and grow with the church.

Background

ODPC is an independent church, governed by elders and located in Fairfax County in Northern Virginia, started in the early 1980’s and consisting of two inter-dependent congregations:  the EC and the Korean-speaking Congregation (KC).  The EC and KC is each governed by its own board of elders, with matters affecting both congregations addressed jointly by both the EC and KC boards of elders.  On Sundays, approximately 450 adults attend two EC services while approximately 2,000 adults attend four KC services.  EC service attenders are predominantly Korean-American, though there has been a slight increase in the number of attenders of other ethnicities, reflecting the growing ethnic diversity of the populations in Northern Virginia.

Our vision is “to be an open door to a life-changing grace” and our mission is to be “gospel communities sent in the everyday.”  We believe God is calling us to grow more in our witness right where we are in Northern Virginia and the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area, as well as to the unreached who are abroad (with current regional focus in parts of India, Central Asia, and Northeast Asia).

Position Description

The Lead Pastor will lead/oversee/minister in the following areas of responsibility and examples of the Lead Pastor’s assignments will include:

Leadership:  Provide direction for, cast vision, and oversee all aspects of, EC’s ministry efforts so that we more faithfully (i) embody our vision to be an “Open Door to a Life Changing Grace” with the mission of becoming a church of “Gospel Communities Sent in the Everyday,” and (ii) demonstrate and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through hospitality, service, and witness in the ordinary rhythms and spheres of our daily lives—in our families and friendships, neighborhoods and communities, and workplaces.  Specifically, lead and provide direction in developing EC’s vision and mission;
Serve in the area of pastoral visitations;
Lead and provide direction of discipleship integration into our Gospel Community Groups

Gospel Community:  Lead and provide direction, as part of a team of pastors, elders, and deacons, EC’s community life as expressed through our Gospel Community (GC) groups (small groups) so that it (i) fully embodies its vision to be an “Open Door to a Life Changing Grace” with the mission of becoming a church of “Gospel Communities Sent in the Everyday,” and (ii) fosters authentic relationships and Christ-centered changes in the lives of individuals at various levels of maturity.  Specifically, lead, care for, and equip all deacons and ministry leaders serving in the following ministries:  GCs, men’s, women’s, marriage & family life, and guest;
Work with relevant elders, deacons, and other ministry leaders to align each ministry’s direction and activities with EC’s vision and mission;
Identify, train and develop emerging GC leaders.

Outreach and Missions (Local, Global, and Cultural): Provide direction for, and oversee all aspects of, EC’s outreach and missions life so that it (i) fully embodies its vision to be an open door to a life changing grace and (ii) spreads the gospel message of God’s love through witness and service in our city, our workplaces and in the world.  Additionally, lead, care for and equip all deacons and ministry leaders serving in the following ministries:  Global Missions, Love Herndon, and 9 to 5 (Work and Faith).   Specifically, work with the relevant elders, deacons, and other ministry leaders to align each ministry’s direction and activities to EC’s vision and strategic plan.
(i) Lead, care for and equip leaders serving in, (ii) identify, train and develop emerging leaders for, and (iii) recruit and expand the number of volunteers and members for, these ministries.
Collaborate and coordinate with existing and new strategic outreach and missions partners.

Administration:  Provide direction for, and oversee all aspects of, EC’s administrative needs so that we more faithfully embody our vision to be an “Open Door to a Life Changing Grace with the mission of becoming a church of “Gospel Communities Sent in the Everyday.” Specifically, coordinate and oversee ministry calendars;
Oversee and manage campus ops and security matters;
Coordinate Sunday ministry activities, ministries and events.

Regardless of specific assignments, carry out the following responsibilities:
-Function as the primary preaching pastor, overseeing all Sunday morning preaching;
Develop and teach Bible and theology classes, as requested;
-Meet with congregants for pastoral care and to build relationships, as well as perform baptisms, weddings, funerals, and other functions as needed as a part of the pastoral team;
-Lead weekly staff meetings, various ad hoc and standing ministry team meetings, retreats, and quarterly leadership huddles for deacons;
-Coordinate and support the KC, as well as the Christian Education department, as needed (e.g., joint KC-EC events and strategic initiatives);
-Perform other duties, as assigned, from time to time.
Accountability

The Lead Pastor will serve along with the EC Elder Board consisting of the elders and the Executive Pastor.

Requirements

-A profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

-Ability to handle the Word of God correctly, with gospel-focused and expository preaching and teaching to equip the congregation to become mature disciples of Jesus.

-Commitment to ODPC’s vision and mission.

-Strong work ethic, an attitude of seeking constant improvement, and a teachable heart.

-A commitment to team ministry with the ability to lead and partner effectively with a broad range of people (e.g., ODPC EC elders, deacons, staff, and members, as well with KC elders, deacons, staff, and members).

-Seminary education with a Master’s degree (M.Div)

-Minimum of 7+ years of full-time ministry experience strongly preferred
